
Come join the PGI on Saturday September 20th for the 2025 Annual Fall Field Trip. This year we will explore the geologic wonders of the Cagles Mill Lake.
Meet at the parking area south of the dam at 8:45 am. There is a $7 parking fee per vehicle (free with State Park pass). The tour begins at 9:00 am and will conclude around 2:00 pm. Late arrivals may be able to catch up with the group
in the spillway area.
The morning portion of the tour will start at the auxiliary spillway and the dam where we will learn about the function of a significant flood control reservoir. This will include exploring the deposits associated with the complex Lower Pennsylvanian Mansfield Formation and overlying glacial materials. (opportunity for fossil and/ or coal souvenir collecting)
Lunch will be at Cataract Falls (Please ensure to bring your own sack lunch)
The afternoon portion of the tour tour will include exploring the Middle Mississippian Limestone and Shales. Hike the associated trails and view the picturesque falls while discussing the geological history of the site.
Bring own field gear including sturdy footwear, rain gear (as needed) and a sack lunch. Event is not recommended for smaller children and those with physical challenges.
