It’s time for the annual GeoFest educational event at the Indiana State Museum on February 21st through 23rd. As with past years, PGI will have a display booth with rock samples and the groundwater model to promote both geology careers and the geological sciences to the public.  This year the booth will include newly purchased interactive display models!

PGI is looking for volunteers to help staff our booth.  Two to Three-hour shifts are available Friday, February 21 through Sunday, February 23.  This is a great opportunity to interact with museum visitors while promoting our profession.  Limited parking passes will be available.  Volunteers will also gain free admission to the rock, fossil, and mineral show.

Volunteers should click here to sign up to help out!

Thank you for your support!

PGI’s 2016 field trip to the Indiana Dunes was a great success! We had over 55 attendees and was welcomed with great weather. Many thanks to Todd Thompson, Erin Argyilan and Bill Monaghan for leading an interesting and informative day, covering topics as coastal geology and relict shorelines. Thanks also to the National Park Service for the tour of Mt. Baldy.

PGI Board has begun a monthly Featured Board Member Profile in an effort for our membership to become more familiar with PGI Board Members. This month, the featured board member is PGI President, Rob George.

PGI’s 2016 annual continuing education seminar was a great success! One of the speakers, Kim Foster of Active Environmental, presented a great talk on “Write like a Geoprofessional: Watch What You Say & How You Say It”. Below is a list of Kim’s “dirty words” that should be treated with caution during technical writing:

PGI’s group of dedicated geologists make community outreach a priority in promoting geosciences in the community, especially with our young citizens. PGI’s geologists are available for school visits and group outings desiring a better understanding of the role geologists play in the community. From rocks and fossils to volcanoes and earthquakes, geologists can help a student better understand the natural world and the role we all play in protecting the earth. In addition to school visits, you can find a PGI booth and demonstrations at the annual Geofest rock and mineral show, held at the Indiana State Museum, and Indy Earth Day celebration.

Every year, PGI joins the Indiana State Museum in celebrating geoscience! The museum hosts an annual rock, mineral, fossil and jewelry show and invites local organizations to provide hands-on geoscience activities for the attendees. PGI hosts a display and activity area with local rock cores, a groundwater contamination model and local fossils. Geologists and geoscientists volunteer to answer questions on what do geologists actually do and how knowledge of geology is imperative for everything from infrastructure to environmental protection.

The event is held annually in February. Check the Indiana State Museum for event details (indianamuseum.org).
