In September of 2018, the California State Legislature passed Senate Bill 1422 which stipulated the development of a definition, analytical method and subsequent monitoring of drinking water for Microplastics. The subject of Microplastics in water and the environment has garnered attention from researchers and regulatory bodies internationally for a few years now, but SB1422 marks the 1st action to address Microplastics in the United States. While the consensus is that Microplastics are ubiquitous in the environment – in our water, waste streams, ocean water, sediments and food, it remains critical to place this prevalent occurrence into its proper context.
